Day Four: Today We Reach The Half Way Point of Our Journey

Very early this morning, between the cities of Alice and George West we will hit the geographical half way point of our march.

When we arrived in Alice yesterday we were met by a number of veterans from different veterans groups in the area: The Purple Heart Chapter 598; Dr. Hector P. Garcia's GI Forum chapter; Port Ayers women's Chapter of the G.I. Forum; VVA 910 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 8621.

We stayed overnight at the VFW Hall in Alice. State Rep. Yvonne Tourilles visited had pizza and chicken with the veterans and then spoke. Many of the senior veterans from the surrounding area spoke. Not just in support of the Hospital for South Texas but in terms of larger issues. It really was exciting to any observer of South Texas politics. A passing of the baton of sorts. A challenge to the younger members of the community to take up the flag and fight for issues of consequence to the people.

"Right here in this hall on that stage Hector P. Garcia fought for the dignity of the soldier and all the people of South Texas," one older veteran was heard to say. "Now it's your turn to pick up the flag!"

And we will! We will!

The Corpus Christi Caller Times has a story this morning on the march.
