Little Joe, of Little Joe y La Familia fame (a famous Texas singer from Austin), gave the veterans and those of us walking the 222 mile trek a big send-off this morning at 8 o'clock sharp. A crowd of a 100 or so well wishers appeared to wish us a safe journey.
Rep. Armando Martinez, Rep. Veronica Gonzales and myself participated in presenting a resolution calling on Congress to recognize the need for a veteran's hospital in Deep South Texas. County Judge Ramon Garcia and county commissioner Sylvia Handy also addressed the audience of mostly veterans and their families.
We left the courthouse square and headed north on 281. It seemed to take forever to get out of Edinburg. In fact at this moment, we are about 12 miles north of the city by the Edinburg airport. This is still within the city limits.
