It was a beautiful night last night as we lit the Capitol Christmas Tree on the south lawn of your state capitol. Above you will see a good picture of the tree. Reports tell us that the 32 foot tree comes from Texas. The Capitol grounds were full of visitors and downtown business stayed open to create a festive atmosphere.
I felt fortunate because I had my youngest two children with me, Alyssa and Anthony. Holding them near, listening to the carolers and the other singers, helped me reflect on how lucky we are in this country. Sure there are tough decisions that confront all of us and yes we still have so much work to do, but all in all we are still a country that has been blessed with abundance.
As an aside, I have to note I was already feeling pretty good because the Texas Longhorns won so convincingly and because of that are headed to the Rose Bowl.
After the game, the evening started with song and words from our Texas poet laureate in the Texas House Chamber as the tree which sits in the center of the chamber was later lit. Santa Claus later appeared and took pictures with the guests at the front of the tree. The family and I took a few pictures with Mr. Kringle.
By the way, as I was leaving he told me to be good this year. I looked him in the eye when he said it and he took a moment to glance back, but I'm not sure if he was encouraging me to be good or making a point of any bad behavior from last year.
I'll play it safe and behave.
Be home soon to file for re-election. Please hold the fort while I'm gone.
