The title of the piece by Michael Crowley in the magazine’s 5th Annual Year in Ideas cover package says it all: “Conservative Blogs Are More Effective.”
Crowley, a New Republic writer, claims that with the 2006 elections approaching, Democrats are now “trying to use blogs more strategically.” But he concludes by embracing the view of Matt Stoller, an activist who ran a blog for Sen. Jon Corzine during his 2005 race for governor of New Jersey, who believes that next year conservative bloggers “will certain have an upper hand.” Crowley adds: “Again.”
“Democrats say there’s a key difference between liberals and conservatives online. Liberals use the Web to air ideas and vent grievances with one another, often ripping into Democratic leaders….Conservatives, by contrast, skillfully use the Web to provide maximum benefit for their issues and candidates.”

I suppose so, if "effective" is defined as both the right-wing media -- the legions of ultra-conservative local and national radio talkers and FOX and Sinclair and Drudge and Newsmax and et cetera ad nauseum-- as well the mainstream media being willing to pick up and repeat and retransmit their BS.
But the liberal blogosphere -- and BTW, thank you for contributing to it, Rep. Pena -- is a much greater value-added for our side because we have essentially no media infrastructure. They claim we have the NYT, but that's simply another distortion. We have a few radio programs and Keith Olbermann and most of the time the Daily Show and its spinoff Colbert Report (satire, if you note; none of which appears to exist on the right).
If all the conservative blogs disappeared tomorrow, it wouldn't have any impact on the national discourse. That's because it's just one vast echo chamber on the right. No disagreement, no dissension, just marching in lockstep.
I think he just called you a liberal Señor Rep. :-)
Perry, you may call me a conservative.
I think you have it backwards. Blogs are the way conservatives have circumvented the press, where 80% or more of reporters are liberal yet pretend to be objective. We have FOX news against CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, and NPR. Most newspapers are biased. You can't seriously say that Hollywood is conservative.
I think that Conservatives realized that they could not get a fair shake in the news no matter what. It's just not possible. The only time Bush is praised is when he does something agreeable to liberals. So, Conservatives express their views and push the agenda through blogs. Conservative blogs are their network.
Liberal blogs, on the other hand, are just an extension of the network.
