Edinburg Breaks Ground On Sekula Memorial Library

Ground was broken today on the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library in the City of Edinburg. A fitting memorial to the memory of the many who lost their lives or heeded the call of service for their nation.

As you may recall our community lost young Dustin as he served in Iraq. On April 1, 2004, U.S. Marine Dustin Michael Sekula was killed in action while working to keep the peace in Al Anbar Province, Iraq; he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, California.

We honored young Dusty, as his friends called him, in the last legislative session. Today the City of Edinburg did their part.

Mayor Richard Garcia led us through the touching ceremony that caused us all to reflect on the many who sacrificed so much in the recent wars in the Middle East. The City Council was there. Representative Gonzalez also appeared to pay her respects and to share her thoughts. Dustin's mother and brothers and sister were there. I also saw the mother of medal of honor winner Freddy Gonzalez who has been a living example of stregnth for our community and the families of many of our veterans.

The finished building is shown in the artist rendition. The Monitor carried the story of the event.

The Rep. said...

Show me the suffering of the most miserable, so I may know my people's plight.

Free me to pray for others, for you are present in every person.

Help me to take responsibility for my own life, so that I can be free at last.

Grant me courage to serve others, for in service there is true life.

Give me honesty and patience, so that I can work with other workers.

Bring forth song and celebration, so that the Spirit will be alive among us.

Let the Spirit flourish and grow, so that we will never tire of the struggle.

Let us remember those who have died for justice, for they have given us life.

Help us love even those who hate us, so we can change the world.

Amen.
