How the Democrats Took U.S. Senate Candidate Paul Hackett Out

Democratic Senate candidate and Marine Corps Major Paul Hackett is accustomed to waging quixotic battles and taking his hits. He just didn't expect the lowest and fatal blows to come from his own party. Mother Jones has a good story on how party insiders killed off a great candidate.

I've spent many years involved in party politics and for those of you who naively believe this doesn't happen in Texas, all I can say is keep dreaming. Paul Hackett was a good man who got a raw deal by those in power, blinded in the moment by power. This unfortunate circumstance should be a case study to those of us who still believe that power in a democracy belongs to the people and not the powerful.

It was most unfortunate that Hackett was pretty much forced out by a few select higher-ups in the Democratic party. However, the fact that his inexperienced campaign staff released their opposition research on Sherrod Brown to the Republicans just goes to show the divisions within our own party.

Brown isn't a bad guy and Hackett would be broke after the primaries. The focus should shift back to winning that Senate seat.

Oh, and just so you know, Paul Hackett has joined the board of directors for the Iraq&Afghanistan Veterans PAC (IAVAPAC). His good deeds will not go unnoticed.
