San Antonio Express: College of Pharmacy Needs Funds — NOW!

The Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy has proven that if you build it, they will come.

More than 1,000 students are actively seeking admission into its program. The dean has applications from more than 100 academics who want to join the faculty.

If officials at Texas A&M University-Kingsville are lucky, they will be able to admit 70 students into the program, hire more faculty and start pharmacy classes in the fall.

The likelihood of that happening, however, grows dimmer every day.

Funding for the pharmacy college, the first professional school in South Texas, has been a problem from the beginning. State lawmakers have repeatedly failed to adequately fund the school.

The college needs at least $5 million if it's to open its doors in the fall.

University President Rumaldo Juarez said last week he plans to cancel pharmacy classes for the fall if he does not have a funding commitment in 10 days.

Who can blame him?
