The nation's most prominent opponent of current immigration policy is television news anchor, Lou Dobbs of CNN. That outspoken position has been quite rewarding to CNN as recent ratings show that Mr. Dobbs program is up 24 percent in total viewers over the same period last year. In fact the Lou Dobbs program is the only good news story in CNN's evening and prime-time lineup, which was otherwise down across the board in ratings for the past quarter. The focus has obviously touched a cord with some Americans.
The increase in ratings and the public's appetite for such programming is the subject of the following New York Times story.

I’m glad to see that your are blogging on this very important issue of immigration. I understand that immigration policy is based on National politics and decided in the U.S. Congress. However, I am appalled at the lack of attention Valley politicians have demonstrated to the issue of immigration reform. Specifically, our "esteemed" Congressmen from the Rio Grande Valley. All of them, including Cuellar, Doggett, Ortiz and Hinojosa. Why aren’t they at the forefront of this debate? Why has Tancredo, with all his hate, gained more recognition around the country for his opposition to migration, than four Congressmen from an area that knows first hand the problems with our immigration laws? When I left the Valley for law school, I was very proud of the support system that the City of Austin has for immigrants. Here in the Valley, we are embarrassed of our immigrant population. Second, third, and other generations of immigrants look down to first generation immigrants. Nobody can say this is not true because I’ve lived it first hand. Now, my question is, and I understand that State politics do not control the U.S. Congress, but why aren’t State politicians from Texas, especially the Valley, involved in this debate? Some of you would be much better advocates on this debate than students rallying around the streets of LA who do not know the complexity of immigration reform. I don’t have a problem with them rallying, but they just don’t know the real issues involved here and we need all the help we can get from smart politicians who understand the issues and can influence the U.S. Congress to pass a comprehensive bill. Where are our Congressmen when we need them? This situation of immigration is very similar to the 60's movement for civil rights involving blacks. Back then, our white folks feared that the world would come to an end if blacks were integrated into American society, needless to say, they were wrong. Now, they fear that immigrants, these beautiful people, will ruin the American way of life. I know they are wrong once again. I understand some of their concerns and I am not trying to say that immigration does not create problems here at home, but those problems are minor. If we let these immigrant people get out of the shadows of American life, maybe they change their ways and learn to love and understand the meaning of being an American, just the same way I have learned that this is the most amazing country in the world. What is wrong with our politiicans Rep. (Congressmen and State Valley politicians), why aren’t we a part of this debate?
Anon-
Congressman Tancredo is not full of hate, but has statistical information to back up his stance in immigration.
Estimates I have seen say illegal immigration costs Texans 4.7 Billion dollars, with around 4 billion of that just in educating them.
This trend needs to stop.
Rep. Pena-do you support any of the bill currently before Congress?
We'll never get an answer.
yes
Lou Dobbs is great!!!He should run for president. Anybody who is illegal and taking benefits from this country should be sent to IRAQ to colonize. This would solve the Middle East situation with the Arabs too. Dump the Illegals no matter what country they are from in IRAQ to colonize.
