I've left the comfort of my small town and made my way to the nation's capitol in order to participate as a guest speaker at the National Conference of State Legislatures. Got here with enough time to hear some of the early presentations. Late in the afternoon, I pulled away from the group to see some of the city sights.
Washington's monuments have an inspiring effect on any visitor in the day time, but I have found a nighttime visit really touches the heart. Before I left Deep South Texas, my wife and I watched Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. It's a little sentimental, I know, but it seemed appropriate in light of the trip. So tonight, I'm doing the Mr. Smith thing, you know, paying a visit to the national monuments. The Lincoln Memorial is always first on my to visit list. Tonight it does not fail to work it's magic as I stare up at a very human president from the most humble of beginnings. Before I make it back to the hotel, I think I'll just sit here on the monument steps and stare at the Washington monument in the distance. Priceless!
Back with you tomorrow on the events of the day.
