Governor Open To Adding Teacher Raise To Tax Bills

My visit yesterday to an elementary school in my district allowed me the opportunity to talk to a small group of teachers regarding their current circumstance as teachers. Inevitably our discussion turned to the issue of pay. They all expressed that we had better hurry because more and more teachers would be dropping out of the profession if we didn't do something quick.

Today's Dallas Morning News has a story regarding the governor's statement that he is open to adding a teacher pay raise to the tax bills we are considering. If we are going to finally pass a tax bill, it would be wise, for a variety of reasons, to add a teacher pay raise. This is important not only because it's necessary but to maintain support for the final tax package. As grass-roots conservatives continue to advocate for a principled stand against taxes some of those members will need a reason to stay on the bill. Moderate Democrats on the other hand might have reason to support the bill, replacing any Republican member who has a change of heart.

The news that the governor is considering widening the call is all good. Let the dance continue. Music maestro!
