Carlos Guerra: Demos' Reversal of GOP Gains Among Latinos is Far From Secure

San Antonio Express columnist, Carlos Guerra, takes off where Paul Burka left off in the discussion over the partisan direction of the Hispanic vote in South Texas.

"And now that Latinos are a larger chunk of the electorate, many are assessing their role in the GOP's recent losses and concluding that the GOP's Hispanic gains have been reversed.

Don't count on it."

As you may assess, I agree with the thrust of Mr. Guerra's column. The so called battleground plan that Texas Democrats followed in the past was primarily limited to East Texas. And although that region is vitally important, as all are, more so than ever before, the new battleground for the partisan future of this state is recognized by Republicans at least to be in those areas less tended to by Democrats - including South Texas. If Democrats want to win again statewide they had better get to work.

The column.

The San Antonio Express has a second article on this subject.

I added a little Vicente Fernandez to spice up the post.

I saw on Quorum Report you are on Speaker Craddick's pledge list. Why?

Rep. I'm just a staffer for one of your colleagues. I won't identify myself for obvious reasons. I would ask that you please not fall for supporting Rep. Talton for speaker. We are all sworn to secrecy but some of your Democratic members are supporting him as the alternative to Craddick. I have been told to stay quiet but I don't think we should put up with this. He is even more conservative than the speaker. What should we do?

On Jan. 9, 2007 I expect that there will only be one person seeking election to that position. Each cycle is the same. The overwhelming majority of the House will side with that person. As to Rep. Talton, I had not heard that one.
