New Fine Arts Auditorium at UTPA

The University of Texas - Pan American is scheduled to begin construction on the $40 million dollar Fine Arts Academic and Performance Complex in Edinburg as the result of the passage of the TRB bill and the appropriation of the bond service monies in our latest budget. The fine arts building is expected to accommodate between 7,500 to 10,000 people. Like the other projects highlighted, this center will be a great asset to our growing community. There has been some talk about the form and detail of the structure but regardless of this important fact of greater importance is that our university continues to grow in size and quality with this wonderful community. One of the site locations considered is the location on the Edinburg campus where the tennis courts are presently located.

Hello, Aaron,

I interviewed President Cardenas about two weeks ago at the ribbon cutting for DataSource, and she said the fine arts auditorium is going to hold about 2,500 (two thousand five hundred), and between the TRB and UT money, it will be worth about $50 million. I will have to check my audio tape of that interview next week, because I wasn't going to put out a story until right before the UT Board of Regents came to Edinburg. You may want to doublecheck with her on the projected seating capacity. It may be 2,500 fixed seating with the ability to add several thousand more seats, but she didn't give me that scenario. Unless you know different for sure, perhaps you should change the seating capacity to "more than 2,000" rather than be committed to specific numbers. Just a suggestion.

By the way, the Student Fitness Center looks tremendous. I still remember going to Pan Am back in 1975, and it seems that every class we had was in the Liberal Arts Building. We should have had it so good back in the day!
