VA Announces Health Care Center for the Valley

Today I joined Valley leaders at a press conference at the Regional Academic Health Center regarding the release of the VA Health Care Study. I am flanked by United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Congressman Henry Cuellar. Joining me at the podium from left to right are Bill Summers of the RGV Partnership, Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell, State Representative Kino Flores and McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez.

I took the opportunity to call for the construction of a four-year medical school in the Rio Grande Valley to compliment the expanded VA Medical Center.

If the plan is fully implemented we can see $100 million come to the region over the next 20 years. Although some veterans have reservations, I think most would see this as better than our current situation. I and most of the veterans who marched to San Antonio will continue the fight for a full fledged VA hospital. We will have to keep up the pressure on officials if this small step forward will mature into that dream. I still think we can do better for the veterans of our community. I have got my marching boots on the ready when called.

The Rio Grande Guardian has the initial story.

Here is a PDF of the study.
