With Candidates In Place The Final Confrontation Begins

The filing deadline for candidates has passed and so we begin the final confrontation (not exactly like the video, but close in some cases). I picked up one opponent in the Democratic primary and no challenger in the Republican primary. This means that March 4, 2008 is the effective Election Day for House Dist. 40.

Tonight was my first opportunity to confront my challenger as we each were invited to speak before the Hidalgo County Democratic Party at their largest event of the year. Every Democrat is expected to attend as it provides the first opportunity for the competing candidates to confront each other. As he did many times in our 2004 race against each other, Eddie Saenz failed to appear at tonight's event. No chance to debate here. He instead sent his wife to try to explain his absence.

I don't mind debating my opponents wife, if she was the candidate running for office. A very sad spectacle for him. If Saenz intends to run for office he should have the courage to attend important Democratic functions and not have his wife try to do his work for him (although she did a good job). At the state capitol you can't exactly call your wife in and ask her to attend committee hearings or floor debate.

Based on information that has reached our campaign on his residence and his disregard and failure to appear at tonight's important Democratic function for a minimal debate he should really consider dropping out of the race.

Edinburg Watch throws in it's two cents.

Capitol Annex also addresses the Saenz absence and his difficult residency question.

Saw Eddie having lunch with a bunch of business people at Luby's in Edinburg today. He didn't show because he does not identify with the Dems. Wasn't he a big donor for the Republicans?

Thanks for showing up last night. It means a bunch to those of us working for the party.

Next thing you know he'll send in his mother. How does he expect your constituents to believe that he will stand for them when he can't even stand up for himself?

Good job last night Rep. Eddie really screwed up last night by sending his wife to do his job. Have you checked out where Eddie lives. My cousin lives close to him at his address 3113 Las Cruces Drive. That is not in your district. You ought to call him out on it.

Eddie's wife said he couldn't show up because he was with his seriously ill dad. Representative Pena we just saw Eddie at a basketball game tonight.

It's either a miracle or Eddie Saenz and his wife are liars.

Just wanted to tell you about the Capitol Annex story but I see that you have seen it already. Has the guy explained why they had to lie about this?

Eddie Saenz campaign is totally going south. First, the DWI (which is still pending by the way), then all Pharr area elected officials (who Eddie does work for and is friends with) get indicted and plead guilty, then Manny Hernandez (EE School board member which is a delta area helping Eddie's campaign) gets arrested not once, not twice but three times, then Eddie sends his wife to represent him at the largest democratic gala of the year for which he was invited and cites that he is away tending his father who is ill....Next thing that happens is he is spotted at a basketball ball game a day later. Que pendejo and he wants to be a State Legislator? Give me a break!

Someone has the Eddie Saenz DWI video and he is supposed to be falling over drunk. Have you seen it?
