From The Campaign Trail
"You tax us when we're born. You tax us when we're dead. You tax us when we eat. You tax us when we sleep. You tax us every which way... get off my back!"
This sentiment, that is shared by many in this country, was made by a senior citizen at the McCain Town Hall meeting in Denver on July 7. I have posted it here because I have seen this same sentiment replicated at town hall and committee meetings on a variety of issues. The message is understood and well received.
Put another way, here is the same message from the movie Network (1976) from the last time this country collectively shared this frustration.

But "you" don't tax us transparently or equally. Commercial and high-dollar personal properties are under-appraised relative to mine because there's no obligation to disclose actual price at sale (unless, of course, Dallas pays 42 million for land appraised at 7 or 8 - then it's public info).
And the IRS has determined that I spend a grand or so on sales tax every year (and they're pretty close in an average year). I don't have a problem kicking a grand a year into the state treasury for buying stuff I could probably live without, but paying that tax on underwear irks me a bit. Guess I can live a commando lifestyle if it really gets to me.
Actually, what bugs me about the sales tax is that it's such a regressive tax. It's a damned Ponzi scheme is all it is - let the poor folk and those on fixed incomes pay for those at the top of the pyramid.
Aaron, I live well outside your district - it's not as if my views should alter your actions if you feel you're honestly reflecting the needs of the people you represent.
But I truly believe that if taxes and fees were perceived as fair, we'd have a whole different battle on our hands in paying for the things we need.
