VAMOS Donates One Million In Scholarship Funds

My sincere appreciation to VAMOS Scholarships that donated $1,000,000.00 in scholarship funds this morning so that our community can invest in the coming generations of leaders.

The Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities & Scholarships (VAMOS) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide renewable scholarships to all deserving students in Hidalgo, Cameron, and Starr counties for the purpose of completing a post secondary education. It all started in March of 1996 when 62 local business and community leaders assembled to improve and broaden the educational opportunities for students in South Texas.

The million dollars from VAMOS will be matched by the UTPA Foundation. This will start a $2 million matching endowed scholarship program with the University of Texas-Pan American. This will be the largest donation UTPA has ever received for scholarships from a non-profit group.

Our special thanks to Alonzo Cantu who has been at the forefront of this effort from it's inception. David Guerra and Sonia Falcon, who both spoke at this mornings press conference, should also be commended for their leadership.

The Monitor has the story.
