Dec 26, 2008
25 days and counting to the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States.
In keeping with the symbolism of Lincoln, whose actions in the 19th Century, made this historic 21st Century Inauguration possible, President elect Barack Obama will take his oath using Abraham Lincoln's bible. Not a bad birthday present for President Lincoln on his 200th birthday.
My youngest child, Anthony, who earlier this year traveled with me by train to Springfield, Illinois, to learn more about Lincoln and Obama, will accompany me to Washington D.C. for the presidential inauguration. Unfortunately, this time does not permit the two of us another train ride (Obama will make it to D.C. by train).
This year he will have seen the full circle of this important piece of history laid before him - from Lincoln's Salem home and his growth as a lawyer, legislator and President to the evolutionary fulfillment of his policies in the election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States. The evils of slavery and later segregation have been overcome by the goodness and awesome possibilities that this country offers.
And as we gather this January 20, confronted by the great global economic challenges in this coldest part of the year, it is fitting that we as a country celebrate and shout at the darkness, that with God's blessing - we will overcome.
A fittting tribute to our country and the promise of our future.
