Students Advocate Environmental Awareness

It's a big thumbs up as South Texas students accomplished their mission in visiting their legislators at the state capitol. Moments ago I was joined by UTPA and STC Reenergize Texas Student Group which included the UTPA Enviornmental Awareness Club.

Representative PeÑa,
Thank you for taking the time to consider the demands of Texas students who are trying to secure their future in the face of global climate change and our present economic situation.

With this president, and this need to restore America's economy, morale, and faith in our government, America and the World are presented with possibly the most optimal conditions in history to restructure our economy in a smarter, cleaner, more ethical and sustainable way, as we rebuild it.

The coal technology of today is over 250 years old. The first commercial coal plant was built in 1748 near Richmond, VA. (source: www.netl.doe.gov/KeyIssues/historyofcoaluse.html )

Coal companies do not increase jobs-- they reduce them:
In 1948, 168 million tons of coal was produced by 126,000 miners. Last year, 15,000 West Virginia coal miners produced about 128 million tons of coal, using high-tech machines. Yet coal mining remains the deadliest of the extractive industries, with about half of all US mining fatalities each year occurring in coal mines.

Furthermore, everytime we purchase coal, we are expropriating profits to another state or nation.

Thank you for serving Texas.

Hello Rep Pena.
I'm actually one of the students shown in the picture above. I'm so glad you took the time to meet with us. It was an honor and we look forward in turning UTPA greener and the surrounding community. We're working hard to do so.
