Laredos Rio Fest is attracting a lot of attention as they prepare for their international canoe and kayak race scheduled for October 16-17. The national offices of CBS News and National Public Radio have already shown an interest in a kayak race on the river, the subject of much international debate.
Putting aside national discussions on immigration, the border wall, or international relations, what people in larger communities may forget is that residents along the Texas-Mexico border have long had historic and deep relations.
“The goal is to make the river a playground for the Mexican youngsters and the Texans,” said Diego Garcia Peña in the San Antonio Express, who founded a canoe club in Monterrey and is helping promote the race. “This is nothing but crazy. ... But this is crazy enough to attempt.
The October 17 canoe and kayak race begins in Del Rio. The competitors will compete for $32,000 in cash in the 33 mile canoe and kayak race down the Rio Grande. Few people outside the border region are aware that the Rio Grande is accessible for recreational purposes. In fact, public access to the river has been assured through treaties for more than 100 years. As long as people adhere to the laws of the United States and Mexico, it is legal. The San Antonio Express News and National Public Radio have highlighted the event. We are doing our part here as well; and, we invite contestants and potential sponsors to contact 512-554-7880 if they are interested.
