In 1979, then United States Senator from Texas, John Tower, appeared at the annual Dallas media party in a full Superman costume. The powerful senator from Texas was never was able to live down his costume selection for the event when he was captured in an awkward pose in a well circulated photograph by Dallas Morning News photographer, David Woo.
Ever since that event politicians have had to be extremely cautious about their selection of costumes when attending costume parties. And so it is that tonight I will be attending a political costume party but have not forgotten the lessons of "Super" Senator Tower's costume spectacle.
Unfortunately, I've decided to play it safe. Yes, politicians are people too and should be able to enjoy a reasonable spectrum of human experiences, but will you ever be able to forget Rudy Giuliani, dressed as a drag queen, at the 2000 Mayor's Inner Circle Press Roast? I still haven't.
Lesson learned, stay away from media parties (except the upcoming Texas Tribune kick-off). Two, save those eccentric statements of dress for your days away from public life. Tonight, I will participate as a good sport but sadly I will have to pass on the bloated Elvis costume.
It's all part of a SAFE and Happy Halloween!
